Personal
Mastery
One of my favorite elements of coaching is “personal mastery”. I
was first introduced to this phrase through Peter Senge’s book “The Fifth
Discipline” where he introduced the dynamic of creative tension and the role it plays in the change
process. Creative tension can be inspiring and motivating as well as uncomfortable,
and even painfull, as our clients navigate the gap between their goals/dreams
and their current reality. Recently I heard the quote: “There are two kinds of
pain. The pain of regret and the pain of mastery.” So true! As coaches, we help
our clients navigate that gap (and pain) through planning and goal setting.
(Here’s a short video for more on creative tension.)are planning and goal setting with our clients? How might we use creative tension more
effectively in service to our clients?
How about your own plans and goals? Take some time this
month to re-visit your own
goals/dreams and notice how creative tension is present to catapult you forward as well!
